The first binder was created by Allie's dad upon her diagnosis with cancer. He put this together to keep all of her medical information organized and easily accessible.
Parents are inundated with medical information, appointment details, provider business cards, test results, reports, research, and patient resources.
Allie's binder was extremely helpful to our family through every step of her illness.
We decided to use the knowledge we gained to help other families manage their journeys through illness, and so the Allie's Angels Medical Information Manager Binder was born.
We are honored to have been able to provide Beaumont Children's Hospital (now Corewell Health) a Medical Information Manager binder for every newly diagnosed pediatric cancer patient since 2002.
Over the years, we continuously improve the design of the organizer based on patient and hospital feedback, adding features such as a disposable camera and scrapbook for the child to capture his/her journey, an adult coloring book and colored pencils for mom & dad, a deck of cards, lip balm, a fidget toy to ease anxiety, and pediatric designed COVID masks.
We have developed a close relationship with local pediatric hospitals and support organizations who rely on us to help when they have a child experiencing a tough time. We are contacted when there is a young patient who needs something and we are quick to respond and provide that mini-wish for the child.
We have granted hundreds of mini-wishes throughout the years, and it warms our hearts to know that we can be a quick resource for the hospital staff when a child is having a particularly tough time.
Examples of Mini-Wishes granted:
Laptop/IPad to keep up with schoolwork
Detroit Zoo Family Pass
American Girl doll
XBox or Playstation game system
Portable air-conditioner
Hospital visit from Santa
Weekend at water park for family
Barbie Jeep
Prom dress and salon pampering
Birthday party at pottery painting shop
Specialized stroller
And SO many more!!!
Allie's Angels provides free events for local children dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Sample of the events provided:
DAY OF BEAUTY
Pediatric patients are treated to haircuts and styles, makeup applications, manicures, pedicures, gifts and a fabulous lunch. The girls leave feeling like princesses, and parents often comment that they hadn't seen their children this happy in a long time. To date, we have hosted 8 Day of Beauty events at local salons.
SECRET SANTA SHOPPING DAY
We created a gift-cart for children who must spend the holidays in the hospital and for those who are immuno-compromised and unable to shop at public stores.
We brought the gift cart to several hospitals a few days before Christmas, and allowed the children to 'shop for free' and select special things for their families. We wrapped the gifts and left them with each child.
To date, we have hosted over 15 Free Shopping Days at 2 hospitals!
By choosing gifts to give to their loved ones, our hope is to give these children a sense of control at a time when they may feel like they have none.
SURVIVOR PICNIC
Patients and their families, along with hospital staff, are invited to a carnival picnic to celebrate their courageous fight during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Children play games, win prizes, enjoy a picnic lunch and may even have the chance to hit the target to dunk their doctor in the dunk tank!
To date, we have hosted 4 picnics!
Every child gets to win prizes!
Picnics for patients and families (in-treatment or post-treatment) with their care team.
Activities for children to enjoy.
Its so much fun to see the excitement in the children as they try to dunk their doctor!
